The food drive is continuing a little longer.  You can still donate at Second Harvest Food Bank. I’ve been hoping that we could reach $1000.00 in donations which equals 2,000 nutritious meals.  So far we have raised $607.80, which isn’t bad.

Second Harvest Food Bank says:
“Even as the economy begins to recover, the requests for help continue to grow since joblessness is still on the rise. Last year our multi-lingual Food Connection hotline received more than 40,000 calls, a 44% increase over the previous year. Currently, more than two thirds of requests are from first time callers who have never before needed food assistance.”

“In addition to the increase in people coming to us for help, the Food Bank is also struggling with a decrease in canned food and shelf stable donations. The majority of the food we distribute is donated food and as large manufacturers and retailers tighten their belts, the Food Bank has to turn to the community and other sources to make up those lost donations. We are in need of high-quality, high-protein items such as tuna, soups and chili, as well as canned fruit and canned vegetables.”

“Every month more than 207,000 people in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties rely on the Food Bank to help them feed themselves and their families.”

As we go into the Holiday Season when most of us gather with friends and family around tables laden with food, it would be wonderful if we could help as many families as possible provide their basic food needs.

The virtual food drive with Second Harvest Food Bank continues to raise funds.  We have raised $607.80 as of the last update.  It is probably more as it takes Second Harvest a little while to update the website total.

Each dollar donated to Second Harvest Food Bank equals 2 nutritious meals.  They are able to buy a lot more food per dollar then individuals can buy.

The clients that they serve include many families with at least one employed member, the elder, families with children an others.  The numbers of working poor have increased with the economic melt down.  More people are asking for food then ever before.

Please consider helping those less fortunate then you by making a tax deductible donation to Second Harvest Food Bank.

We are proud to announce our 2009 High Holiday Food and Fund Drive to support Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. Our drive will assist Second Harvest to feed those struggling to eat during these tough economic times.

Each month Second Harvest serves an average of 207,566 people, a 17% increase over last year. For many callers, this is the first time they are tapping into the Food Bank’s services. Let’s do our part to make sure no child, senior or family goes hungry this holiday season. I invite you to participate in supporting our community.

Where and How? ONLINE: Go to www.VirtualHarvest.net to make a monetary donation.  Every dollar donated can provide two meals. Choose Donor type: Congregations and choose our organization’s name Congregation Kol Emeth.  (Team is not applicable.) Then click on the NEXT button.  You will then be taken to the “virtual store” where you can select specific items to donate.  If you don’t want to donate specific items, scroll to the bottom of that page whenre you will see a box that allows you to enter a specific amount.

This message is off my normal topic but is very important.  With so many people having to choose between paying rent/mortgage and buy food for their families, the Second Harvest Food Bank is in need of our help.  The advantage of donating online, instead of bringing in bags of food is that Second Harvest can buy far more food per dollar then we can buy.  Any size of donation is helpful and greatly appreciated.
