2 Important subjects for making money online.

1. List building. It is hard to make money online without a list. Many of the internet marketing products you buy, assume that you have a list. I know that I bought a lot of products that I learned a lot from, but couldn’t put into practice until I got my list built.

The easiest way of building a list is to have something to give away. You can do that by creating an ebook of your own, or you can find free ebooks to give away online. You can also pay people to create an ebook for you. You can do this on your blog and you can also participate in free online give aways.

2. You can make money online without creating your own product. You can sell other people’s products by becoming an Affiliate Marketer. I will go into this more in future articles but you can get started right away by checking out ClickBank at www.clickbank.com. You can do this with a small list and make money while you are growing your list.

Autoresponders

A subscription to an autoresponder service is critical to internet marketing. I’ve just gone through all the mail I have received in the last week to find out what autoresponder service was used. Most used was Aweber followed by InfusionSoft. The people using InfusionSoft were those who do multi-million dollar launches. Awebers starts around $20.00 a month, less if you pay by year and InfusionSoft starts at around $200.00 a month. There are other autoresponder systems available which you can find by doing a search. You can also look at the messages you receive and see what autoresponders are being used.

So what is an autoresponder service:
Autoreponders have a number of features that make it easier to gather, maintain and market to your lists. The sign-up form on the right of my blog was created in Aweber and then copied into my blog. Once someone signs up for your list, you want to keep in touch with them.

Here are some of the features that autoresponder services provide

Provides the html form

Double optin page
When you sign-up your information is going directly into my autoresponder lists and it provides a “double optin” so that Aweber sends an email to you to make sure you really want to be on the list. Why do this? It helps prevent spam. We all want to avoid spamming people.

Download page
This is the site where you can download the Ethical Bribe

Thank you page
Once you’ve finish downloading the free item, you are then sent to a Thank You page which either gives you more information or sends you back the blog or website, depending on how you configure it.

Follow-up messages
You can create a series of email messages that your autoresponder will send out. This is completely configurable. You can select how often they get messages, what those messages are, etc. You can get really creative and send specific messages to those who haven’t responded and other messages to those who have responded. This really helps your conversion rate. It is also good to keep in contact with people and share information without always selling to them.

Broadcast messages
. This is a specific message that you can send to all or some of the lists you have in your autoresponder

Create multiple lists.
You can have multiple lists in your autoresponder. If you are doing affiliate marketing, you can have a list per item and then you can track what items your list responded to. That way you would know in the future, what to market.

Tracking
Autoresponder services allow you find out what is working with your list and what isn’t working.

Ethical Bribes

This is the item you are using as a free offer in exchange for people to give you their name and email address. This can be anything item that you think your audience would be interested it. It does not have to be created by you. If it is something that was created by someone else, you must have the “rights” to give it away.

Newsletters:
If you are using a blog, newsletters can be created by compiling your blog posts. You can add a few extras so that people will be getting something special with your newsletter.

Reports:
These can be PLRs (Private Label Rights reports) but must be on a subject related to your blog. If you have a blog on gardening, giving away a report on sailing probably would not resonate with your readers.

Audios:
These can be created by you, be recordings of conference calls you make, interviews you do, or be done by others as long as you have the rights. If you are doing affiliate marketing, it could by something the affiliate has created.

Videos:
Again this can be created by you. You can share information related to your blog/website. If you are doing affiliate marketing, they affiliate may already have videos that they will allow you to post. You must check with them first.

Building a list with a Blog or Website

The easiest way to get started building a list is to use either a blog or a website. What you want is to attract people to a location and then give them a reason to give you their name and email address. The blog or website gives you the credibility, i.e. makes you an “expert”.

The difference between a blog and a website:
There is not a lot of difference between using a blog or website. A blog is a website that has most of the programming done for you. It is easier to set up for those who are not technical. Which ever you decide to use, you will want a sign-up form prominently displayed.

Blogs:
Blogs can be hosted either by the company that makes the blogging software, wordpress, blogger, etc. or on a webhost of your choice. If you plan to use a blog to make money I strongly encourage you to purchase a domain and have your site hosted.

Websites:
Like blogs you need a domain and web host. Some web hosts have software built in that helps you design your website and does not require buying software such as Dreamweaver. If you plan on having a website of your own and are not comfortable designing it, you can outsource the design. Make sure you see examples of the designer and ask for references and then contact them.

Domains and Web hosting:
Internet Marketing guru Mike Filsaime uses www.namecheap.com to buy his domains. I use www.name.com. I find that www.hostgator.com has all the features I need for web hosting. (I am not an affiliate of any of these sites, I just use some of them.) It is often the case that you buy your domain with one company and host it elsewhere.

Creating a List is Critical

I took a little time off blogging and attended Frank Kern’s Mass Control 2.0 Conference in San Diego. One of the things that became very clear at the conference was the need for a list even though the subject wasn’t on the agenda.

What can you do without a list?

You can do PPC (Pay Per Click) without a list. For people just getting started, PPC can be expensive and frustrating. PPC is a complicated subject which will be covered at a later date.

Some affiliates programs will let people without a list join, many won’t. You would be able to put a link on your blog or website to the affiliate’s page. That would end up building the affiliate’s list, not yours.

Why does having a list matter?

A list allows you to build up a relationship with the people on it. To build that relationship you will want to share information with your list as well as promoting products to it.

People buy from people they trust. Your lists allows you to build up that trust.

If people buy from you once, they are more likely to buy from you again.

Does the size of the list matter?

To paraphrase a video of Frank Kern, it is the quality of the list that matters, not the quantity. A smaller list that is a “buying list” will often make more money than a larger list with no history of buying.

What do you need to build a list?
I will go over each of these items in separate posts.

A website or blog

An “ethical bribe” such as a free report, video or newsletter

An autoresponder account

How does it work:
If you look to your right, you will see the sign-up form for my list that includes a Free Report. After you enter your name and email address you are sent an email message to confirm your email address. Once you’ve confirmed you are sent to the download page so you can access your free report. Once you have confirmed your address is automatically on my list. Basically you have traded your email address for a report. If you change your mind and want to be removed from a list, unsubscribing is simple. Every email sent by an autoresponder should have an unsubscribe link at the bottom of the message.

Once you have a list, you are ready to start creating trust and then monetizing the list.
